  • What I remember about the 1989 and 1992 actions at L.A. High:
    1. Very little education of subject content took place for those students who attended classes. Administrators or deans who covered classes would give mickey mouse grades for "participation."
    2. Those of us who participated in the strike hated the idea of someone being out one day and back in the next. You had to take the stand of being in or out.
    3. Those who stayed in could make alot of money.
    4. I do not recall administration loving the strike because of the disruption it created on campus. But what made it tolerable was the fact that EVERY employee would receive the raise. All that unpaid money was saved up like Tim said and the district could afford the raises. Amazing how that works.
    5. That the division between those who stayed in and those who did not was very strong and lasted until the Barner years. School site council members were voted in based upon their participation in the strike. Dept chair positions, everything seemed to be based first upon wheter or not the person went on strike.
    6. It has a major effect on your retirement which is why those who are close to retirement tend not to participate. I should have 24 years of serice credit but due to the strikes my service time is 22.
