LA High Unity
Over the last 3 weeks we have had several events and lunch time meetings that have made our local union chapter stronger! Starting off with our “Unity Day,” followed by two days of very frank and open discussion about work actions and strikes, all led up to a beautiful showing of over 40 LA High teachers at the December 6th Rally downtown.
I don’t know what you’ve been told -but these Roman teachers are might bold. Over the last 4 years our local chapter has really made a name for itself within the larger union and with our administration. To think that just 4 years ago we NEVER met during lunch - EVER! And here we are now meeting weekly. Admitting that we still have plenty of work to do, it is nice to take stock from time to time and notice that change, though ever slow, is happening because of our hard work and commitment to each other.
Our current contract fight cannot just be about salaries and class size. We need to use this time to also make steps towards taking our school back! In order to do this we need to come together ourselves as a community. Thank you so much to all of you who have made these big steps possible.
Strike Vet Panel Lunch 12/13
Next week on the 13th we will have a unique opportunity to hear from each other and the experiences of our most veteran teachers at our UTLA lunch time panel. Food will be provided so please come straight to room 160 and hear from 6 different teachers and staff who have previously participated in work actions or strikes. Come listen to what they were told by the union and the school. Find out what they considered before acting, decisions they made and why.
ISIS Updates
Last week there was a meeting with district ISIS personnel to discuss upcoming changes to the system. It was also an opportunity for UTLA to bring up issues with the district. Those concerns (particularly around grades) were brought up and here is a list of items to keep in mind:
Soon we may be able to upload and download our grades directly from the GradePro program.
The district cannot mandate teachers to use a particular grade book.
There is no policy that mandates that teachers take attendance during the 1st 15 minutes of every period.
(Yes, doing so helps out the school. And taking attendance early is a good practice to get into the habit of.)

Contract Update
So you’ve heard about how UTLA is pushing for a 9% raise and a class size cap. But have you head about what LAUSD is demanding? How about:
ü Mandatory Buy Back Days!
(This would mean more work for less pay because they will no longer pay us the 10thly rate if this becomes mandatory.)
ü Bell Schedule=Principal’s Decision not that of the staff. This 4x4 we keep hearing about would no longer be OUR decision but would be entirely left to the discretion of the principal.
UTLA Holiday Party
This year your local UTLA Chapter is hosting our Holiday Party at Tom Bergin’s Tavern-- December 21st from 4pm-7pm. Please plan on stopping by it will be a great way to kick off our holiday vacation. Our event will be located in the backroom by the fireplace.
